Photoshop Fashion Illustration...

This for all those illustrators who are good at illustration but not that great at rendering. Sometimes we love to sketch, but wouldn’t complete the illustration for its takes a lot of time colouring it, be it any medium. Here I must say, Photoshop comes to your rescue!! Photoshop is not only great photo editing software, but it can also be used to manipulate various colour and texture effects on your fashion illustrations.

Begin with a pencil drawn sketch of your style, you can either outline the sketch with a fine tip black pen or the pencil outlines of the scanned illustration can also be converted into black colour in Photoshop by altering the brightness and contrast of the image. Now you have black sketch against a white back drop.

I have always been inspired by natural textures and colours. Such natural textures are many times also incorporated in garments. So let’s do an illustration using one such element: leaves. You can Google images on the net till you get the desired texture and colour gradient that you want to use in your Illustration. In my illustration I would be using two leaf textures one for the skirt and one for the bodice of gown.

Select the white area in the sketch and delete it to get a transparent work field. Select the desired part of leaf image that you want to use in the illustration and move it to your sketch.

You can give this leaf artistic kind of effect by giving by using various filters available in Photoshop. Use one or more filters till you get the desired effect. Smudge tool also helps to great extent to get brush like effects.

Duplicate the leaf layers till you have enough to cover the skirt flare.Rotate and adjust to get a desired arrangement and then merge layers which have leaves.

Always keep the sketch on the topmost layer. Now cut the extra portions extending out of the sketch borders to achieve the effect that the skirt is rendered in leafy layers.

Now select another texture and repeat the same for the bodice of the gown. The colour of the filled image can be changed by changing the hue-saturation and color balance adjustments in Photoshop.

At the end finishing touches such as rendering the skin and hair. I usually convert the black outlines to a darker tone of the fill to make it more dramatic. You can also couple of other textures for accessorizing the fashion illustration.

After all the touch ups its done. Isn’t it great!!

There are many ways to layer clothing; some of them are great ways of making your outfit different and personal and some of them can make you look messy and bulky.

The colour and fabric are some of the main points to consider when layering clothing. Avoid using too many layers – 3 things on top is enough. You risk looking bulky if you overdo it.

When it comes to the colours, neutral colours are very good for layering as they have low saturation and are therefore not bright and intense, which gives you a harmonious layering look, while pure, brilliant colours will become central making the softer colours fade.
